WebI have played with csound and supercollider. I like them both, but csound has been very buggy for me (not necessarily anyone's fault but my own). There may be a way of configuring these to use alsa, but I wouldn't know. For supercollider, I highly recommend using the IDE. In my distro this is accomplished by running 'scide'. Web-though arguably trickier to use than a synthesizer or DAW, it seems to be easier for non-programmers to learn than a non-visual audio programming environment like CSound or Supercollider, and also easier than rolling one's own audio code in C++ etc. This puts it within reach of (more) artists and experimental musicians.
