Lightermen and watermen
WebLightermen, who transported goods on barges, or ‘lighters’, typically from ship to wharf, were previously members of the Woodmongers’ Company. They petitioned Parliament to instead be brought under the Watermen’s Company, which occurred from 1700. Thereafter they were bound by the same regulations. WebThe watermen ferried people across the Thames during the Victorian era when there was only one bridge. The lightermen were pilots of small boats who delivered goods from larger ships to the banks of the river.
