WebJun 15, 2024 · I am looking for a new hunting rifle, and one of the features I keep seeing advertised is 5R rifling where there are 5 lands and grooves instead of 4 or 6.. Supposedly this makes the barrel more accurate because the lands oppose a groove instead of each other thus deforming the bullet less. WebJan 23, 2024 · Ah! The old debate on "Ballard" versus micro groove! First off, the is no "Ballard" rifling per se. It is a cut groove plain and simple. Marlin determined in the 50s that MG process produced accurate barrels that cut production time to seconds and extended tooling life. No one has ever really proved one type of rifling is better than the other.
